Learning how to
become a good writer, takes a lot of time and a lot of practice!!!
Children need to not only write every day themselves, but also see other
people writing.
So let your child see you writing every day with your grocery lists,
recipe directions, messages to family members, reminders on the
refrigerator, notes in their lunchbox, e-mails, etc.
In January, the children researched their own animal to put into a Power Point presentation. They researched their animal using books from the library and the internet, typed their facts, and found pictures that related to their writing. They then presented their research to both our class and our 4th grade buddies! Below are few student's presentations. file:///I:/grade1/Ms. McFarland/Debora.mht file:///I:/grade1/Ms. McFarland/James.mht file:///I:/grade1/Ms. McFarland/Josue.mht file:///I:/grade1/Ms. McFarland/Julia.mht In December, the children were learning how to write research papers. They searched through monkey books, newspapers and magazines for important facts and then sorted them into categories. Below is some of their research.
Then the children chose one of their facts and created a page for our monkey book. They shared their book with their friends in First Grade on December 20-21, 2006. Below are a few pages from the book.
In November we created procedural texts (How To books) during Writer's Workshop! The children learned how to make Materials Lists, add Transition Words (First, Next, Then) and make simple steps that their readers could follow. After our trip to Sharpe's Farm, the class created a book, How To Make Farm Fresh Popcorn. Below is what they wrote!!! How to Make Farm Fresh Popcorn First, take the corn off the plant's stalk. Then, take the leaves off the cob. Next, place the kernels in a paper bag. Fifth, put the popcorn bag into the microwave. Finally, eat it!!
