Volunteer Projects

Since our chapter's conception in 2007, National Honor Society members have been very active volunteers. In order to remain a member of National Honor Society, each member needs to get a certain amount of volunteer hours a year. This year we have expanded our service requirement and have become involved in more volunteer organizations. One of the organizations that we have added is Comcast Reading Tutors. A small group of NHS members will pair up with a second grader and they will help that child with his/her reading skills once a week. We also have a small group of member volunteering every Sunday on a bi-monthly basis at Rainbow Place, a shelter for women.

KEEN (Kids Enjoy Exercise Now)

KEEN is an organization that runs a variety of athletic and musical activities for mentally disabled children and young adults. Originally, NHS got involved withe KEEN on a once-a-year basis, but this school year, we are volunteering withh KEEN on a bi-monthly basis for about twenty weeks.

SOME (So Others Might Eat)

SOME is a favorite among NHS members. SOME is a soup kitchen in Washington, DC. Volunteering at SOME started as a one-time event, but everybody loved it so much that now a group of three to four students will volunteer there on the first Sunday of every month to serve breakfast.

FOSC (Friends of Sligo Creek)

FOSC is an organization dedicated to cleaning up Sligo Creek and insuring that its watersheds are clean as well. NHS has been volunteering with FOSC once a year for its major spring clean up since 2007. However, this spring we plan to start volunterring on a bi-monthly basis. Even if you are not in NHS, you can talk to Mr. Miller and he will be able to give you information about how you can help clean up the creek.

Fundraising

Fundraising is a crucial part of NHS. We use the money that we make throughout the year for induction, graduation, and donations to charity. Last year, we even did a school supply fundraiser where we collected school supplies and donated themto an underprivileged school in Africa. This year, we plan to have book drives and toy drives for charity. We also plan to do a money drive in order to raise money to give mosquito nets to children who live in areas where mosquitos are highly concentrated. NHS made a large profit last year from its sale of candy grams during the holidays.

Your Future

NHS can help you in the future in a variety of ways.

  • College scholarships (Some schools automatically given money to students in NHS)
  • SSL hours for graduation
  • Getting a job
  • Leadership skills
