Ambassadors Program

Middle School Visits – “A Two-Dimensional Program”

At Northwood, we believe that early orientation and preparation in the middle grades help foster achievement for ninth grade students and decrease low grades and discipline problems.  With a team of teacher advisors and student mentors (the Northwood Ambassadors), we hope to provide an environment of learning and success for students as they transition to high school.

To that end, the Northwood Ambassadors program is one of the latest initiatives at Northwood.  Through the collaboration of schools, we intend to ease the affects of the ninth grade experience by establishing programs and services to prepare eighth graders for the challenges of changing schools.

This year, we will be hosting middle school visits to facilitate this process.

Part I. “One Day in the Life of a Ninth Grader" - April 30, 2009

The Northwood Ambassadors will host eighth grade students at Northwood for a half day.  Middle school students will be assigned mentors and they will have the opportunity to shadow them throughout the school day.

Overview of the day:
The middle school students will ride their neighborhood school bus to Northwood High School with the high school students in the morning.  The students will receive further instructions and information at the orientation and in the mail regarding the bus stop location and pick-up times.

  1. 7:10 AM: Opening Session Dr. Johnson, the Program Coordinator, the Northwood Ambassadors, 9th Grade Academy, and the Guidance Counselors
  2. 7: 30 AM:   Students will attend first period with their Ambassador mentor
  3. 8:50 AM- 10:20 AM: Students will attend second with their Ambassador mentor
  4. 10:20 AM-11: 10 AM: Lunch (Lunch will be provided at Northwood)
  5. 11:10 AM- 11:45 AM: Assembly (Northwood Administrators, Coaches, Counselors, Student Government Association, the Dean of Students, and the Northwood Ambassadors)
  6. 12 Noon: Dismissal

Immediately following the program, the middle school students will be transported to their respective schools on the bus provided by Northwood High School.

Transportation: Students will be expected to ride the school bus to and from Northwood unless approval is granted by both school principals.

Selecting Middle School Students to Participate: Middle school administrators and/or counselors should select the students that they want to participate in the program.  Only the students that have been chosen to attend Northwood should attend.

Contacting Middle School Students’ Parents: In order for us to communicate with the eighth grade students and their families, we will need their name, address, and telephone number.  After you submit the information, all correspondence for the program will be handled by the Northwood administration and staff.

Part II. “Giving Back to Our Middle Schools" - May 6 and May 8, 2009

The Northwood Ambassadors and the program coordinator Ms. Ware will visit the feeder schools to speak with eighth grade students about their freshman experience and how they have successfully made the transition to high school.

Available Dates and Times: We will visit the middle schools on May 6 and May 8.

Eighth Grade Assembly:  The Northwood Ambassadors would like to meet with eighth grade students to discuss their experience in high school.  We are open to addressing the students who will attend Northwood next year. The assembly should last thirty minutes.

Topics to Discuss: The Ambassadors will address the following: Time Management, Goal Setting, Peer Pressure, High School Expectations, Study Skills, and Extra-curricular Activities.

Equipment needed: We will need a microphone and podium for the assembly.

Selecting Middle School Students to Participate: Middle school administrators and/or counselors should select the students that they want to participate in the program.  We are willing to speak to as many students as you would like.
