Northwood committees are essential in facilitating relationships and stewarding instructional goals. Each committee has a specific function and purpose. The committees work toward achieving the school's vision of success for all students. Below you will find a brief description of each committee for the 2009-2010 school year.
Academic Achievement Committee
Co-Chairs: Mr. Jonathan D'Souza and Mr. Charles Alexander
This committee is dedicated to ensuring that all Northwood students have the tools to be successful in a rigorous academic environment. The emphasis of the committee will be on the development and implementation of the AP programs. This committee is charged with facilitating the vertical articulation process by providing structured and tangible strategies for incorporating AP strategies in all classrooms.
Diversity Committee
Chair: Mr. Michael Sauter
This committee commits to being a body that seeks to empower students, teachers, and administrators. It will dedicate itself to facilitating programs, practices and attitudes that will help to develop the unique potential of all students. This committee is charged with producing at least three cultural events throughout the year that showcase the diversity of the school population. In addition, the diversity committee will recognize one culture or group for each month of the school year.
Ninth Grade Team Committee
Chair: Mr. Shawn Krasa
This committee will enable Northwood's Ninth Grade Academy students to be successful in a rigorous academic environment. The emphasis of the committee will be on the development and implementation of methods to increase eligibility and facilitate the transition from middle to high school. Members will discuss how strategies can be used in their respective disciplines and develop plans for implementation, including data monitoring and data analysis. This committee is comprised on ninth grade teachers as well as the ninth grade administrator.
College Readiness Committee
Chair: Ms. Fatima Binta and Mr. Michael Sullivan
This committee supports and works with the principal and testing coordinator. This committee is charged with analyzing data to enable students to achieve the Seven Keys goal of scoring 1650 or above on the SAT and at least 24 on the ACT exam. Throughout the year this committee will created programs aimed at educating parents and students about the SAT and ACT exam. In addition, the committee will work to analyze student performance and provide feedback to individual departments on how they can support test preparation strategies for students as they work to meet the Seven Keys goal.
Social Committee
Chair: Ms. Courtney Freeman
This committee is responsible for designing activities that boos staff cohesiveness and morale. To this end, this group may implement the following activities: coordination of the schedule for a monthly staff breakfast; advising the newspaper sponsor, webmaster, etc. of special celebrator events to be published; activities for new staff members; acknowledgment of happy and sad occasions and coordination of events that draw staff together.
Testing Committee
Chair: Ms. Ruschelle Reuben
This committee supports the Testing Coordinator with school, county, and national exams. The Testing Committee will develop school-wide best practices to implement and/or promote the HSAs, all county exams, LAS LINKS, TOEFL, PSAT, SAT, ACT, and AP exams. The committee will assist in creating testing schedules, room assignment posters, and testing bags for teachers. This committee will be comprised of individuals in the various testing areas.
Discipline Committee
Chair: Mr. Travis Hairston
This committee works to enact various disciplinary strategies that address student misconduct in school. The discipline committee is charged with addressing staff concerns regarding issues of student behavior, as well as formulating ways in which to address those issues and behaviors.
Academic Incentives Committee
Co-Chairs: Ms. Tonya Jackson and Mr. Mark Brown
This committee has the goal of creating academic traditions and shaping attitudes that will help students define their academic identity. This committee will work to implement the new Gladiator Express program aimed at utilizing positive reinforcement as a vehicle in promoting academic success.
Community Outreach Committee
This committee is geared toward addressing a significant need at Northwood. Parents are an important stakeholder group. The Community Outreach Committee is charged with garnering parent support and attendance to Back to School Night, attending various meetings throughout the year that address student achievement, and creating social and educational opportunities for parents and community members at the school. |
