About Northwood High School
Vision Statement
We at Northwood, as a diverse community, aspire to participate productively in a global society, commit fully to high academic achievement, and become models of leadership, strength and success.
Mission Statement
Northwood’s mission is to ensure that ALL students have the opportunity to succeed in a rigorous curriculum, including the completion of a learning experience in a college-level environment.
General Information
As part of the Montgomery County Public Schools' Downcounty Consortium, Northwood High School boasts a diverse population of approximately 1400 students. The community is committed to academic rigor and excellence, collaborating with the University of Maryland College Park and Montgomery College to provide students with opportunities to pursue higher education and personal growth.

Northwood originally opened in 1956, but the school was closed in 1985. The expanding student population in the Silver Spring area prompted the re-opening of Northwood in 2004. The new Northwood began with only its freshman class (Class of 2008) and the school gradually grew each year before becoming a four-year high school during the 2007-2008 school year. The Class of 2008 graduated on June 2, 2008 at DAR Constitution Hall.

Today, under the leadership of principal Dr. Henry R. Johnson, Northwood hosts several smaller learning programs, known as academies. The four main academies at Northwood are the Academy of Technology, Environmental and Systems Sciences (TESS), the Academy of Politics, Advocacy and Law (PAL), the Academy of Humanities, Art and Media (HAM), and the Academy of Musical Theatre. Students participate in a block schedule, alternating classes on A and B days.

Northwood's dedication to academic excellence is also demonstrated through the school's involvement with the highly successful Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program.

The Community Superintendent for Northwood is Ms. Bronda Mills. Her telephone number is 301-315-7374.
