Pathways

2016 Academy of Music Theatre and Dance Students in the Academy of Music, Theatre, and Dance examine ways in which people connect with each other and covey their ideas in various performance opportunities. The students in these pathways engage in a comprehensive performing arts education that exposes them to an intensive course of study in the Performing Arts and/or Dance fields. - Performing Arts Pathway students participate in a music, theatre, dance curriculum that exposes them to a variety of performing arts courses. Dance Pathway students participate in an intensive study of dance that allows them to build technical, performance and choreographic skills. Through these pathways students foster strong relations with community members as they build a creative and innovated arts language.

Academy Offerings

  • Performing Arts Pathway electives include: General/9th grade Chorus, Vocal Ensemble, Men’s Choir, Concert Band, Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Piano 1/2, Guitar1/2, Theatre1/2, Advanced Acting/Stage Directing, Musical Theatre and Dance classes: see Dance Pathway 
  • Dance Pathway electives include: Dance as PE, Dance as Fine Art, Ballet, Intermediate Dance, Hip Hop, Modern, Advanced Dance, Jazz, Dance Company 
  • Opportunities to participate in master classes both in school and at colleges, internships, and performances at various community locations. 
  • Opportunities to choreograph, student direct, sing, dance, play in the orchestra and act in school productions and present their own student created work.

Student Expectations

Students will successfully complete four years of electives within the academy pathways, (for the dance pathway, 9th graders must complete Dance as PE before moving into elective course work). Successful completion requires students to: 

  1. Maintain portfolio reflections for each course, 
  2. Obtain a teacher recommendation for each course, and 
  3. Earn a minimum semester grade of a “B” in each course and a minimum 2.0 GPA overall.
  4. Over the course of their high school career, students are expected to participate in at least one extracurricular activity such as the Fall Play, Spring Musical, Billboard Magic, Northwood Drumline and/or Student One Acts. The activity should exemplify the student’s commitment to the field above and beyond the classroom requirements. 
  5. By their senior year, successful candidates will be expected to pursue a position of student leadership and 
  6. Complete a capstone project that demonstrates their growth as learners, their effectiveness as leaders, their recognized accomplishments, and their contributions toward the enhancement of Northwood High School and/or the community.
