What better way to study the environment than beginning with our own “backyard?” The Academy of Technology, Environmental and Systems Sciences (TESS) will provide students the opportunity to learn about earth and its relationship to human society while using technology as an important component of their studies. Students who have an interest in horticulture, landscaping, architecture, and engineering will have many hands-on opportunities toexplore these careers.Concentrating on the concept of “green schools,” students will be involved in the modernization process of Northwood High School, while learning how to conserve energy
and reduce consumption of resources in their own building.

Their classrooms will include the greenhouse at Northwood High School, Wheaton Regional Park, and many other local resources. This approach will allow students to be actively involved in studying environmental conditions and their implications for the community-at-large. The scope of the program
allows for an exploration of all the sciences with rigorous curricula that includes connections to Biology, Chemistry, Horticulture, and Physics.

The 2007-2008 school year has finished at Northwood High School. Three students have graduated and are going to college and five juniors begin their exciting senior year. For its inaugural year, the Student Trail Steward program has had many accomplishments: for details see http://potomacappalachian.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=582&Itemid=2
