Academy Coordinator: Michael Sullivan

The Academies at Northwood High School focus on community and diversity.

The Academy of Technology, Environmental and Systems Sciences (TESS) will explore ecology, aquaculture, climatology, biodiversity, environmental safety, horticulture, and an array of environmental areas. A collaboration with the University of Maryland, College Park highlights the coursework.

The Academy of Politics, Advocacy and Law (PAL) will enable students to study how to become advocates for themselves and the community-at-large and offer an opportunity for students to explore the legal system, government, law enforcement, criminal justice and related fields. Check here every day for an interesting fact related to the law and the people who work with it.

The Academy of Humanities, Art and Media (HAM) enriches it participants with coursework in a variety of areas including film production, literary analysis, the study of culture and languages, oral histories, architecture, and art history with a stimulating array of coursework and internship experiences. A collaboration with the American Film Institute highlights the community arts and the importance of the humanities in academic and college-preparatory work.

The Musical Theatre Academy is geared toward students interested in pursuing college and professional careers in the areas of musical theater, dance, vocal music, and instrumental music. In either solo or group performances, students will produce, act, and perform in a variety of onstage productions. Course work within the academy is designed to focus on all aspects of musical theater production including technical production, vocal and instrumental music, dance, and dramatics. Students in all academy strands (dance, theater, vocal and instrumental music) will be integrally involved in all aspects of musical theater production, giving the students a solid foundation for advanced preparation within the field. A collaboration with the University of Maryland provides opportunities for students to take college course work in their area of interest and to work with college students and professors. The scope and sequence of the academy promotes concurrent enrollment at the University of Maryland during the senior year.
