Am I Eligible?
In order to tryout students must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 from fourth quarter with no more than one E. This year in order for the Poms team to be extremely successful both at performances and within the classroom each member of the team and their parents will be asked to sign an excellence pledge. This contract states that the student athlete pledges to maintain a GPA of at least 2.5 or better beginning August of 2008.
In addition to signing an excellence pledge students will be required to complete a weekly classroom evaluation. This will allow teachers to evaluate the progress of the student so their grades may be held up to standard.
We as mentors, sponsors and parents must remember that participation in an after-school sport is a privilege, not a right and must be treated as such. In raising the academic bar the NHS Poms are hoping to both create and shape leaders who will be successful in their respective sport as well as in the classroom.
When Do the Poms Practice?
Practice as of now will be five days a week from 5 PM to 7 PM. By holding practices later in the evening, students will have time to get homework assistance and speak to their teachers. Also, to aid in the success of the Northwood High School Poms squad study hall will be conducted on Wednesdays from 3 PM to 4:45 PM. Please be mindful that as competition dates approach students may be asked to come to Saturday morning practices to better prepare them for competitions.
Do the Poms have a Dress Code?
Yes. Every member of the NHS Poms team must adhere to the team dress code. During practices/games there must not be any visible jewelry on the athlete - this means no belly button rings, necklaces, bracelets and no earrings other than studs. Athletes must be dressed in appropriate dance attire - meaning no short shorts, tube tops, jeans or midriff shirts etc. Each Pom member must wear dance shoes at all practices/games unless told otherwise. For all home games which the Poms perform, they are required to wear the approved uniform to school. During away games, though the Poms do not perform they are still a spirit squad and must support fellow athletes. For this reason the Poms may be asked to wear a Poms tee-shirt or dress up in professional style clothing during those games.
Are There Parent Meetings? When Can I Speak with the Coach?
Yes, there are parent meetings. Parents are free to meet with the Poms sponsor at their leisure. However, there will be at least two parents meetings throughout the year where parents will be given details concerning the team and their activities, accomplishments and things for the future. These meetings are an opportunity for parents to get involved, voice concerns, ideas and thoughts about their child and/or the team. I encourage all parents to attend or send someone in their place. Parental support aids the team tremendously and gives you as parents the freedom to know what is going on with your child and their sport of choice.
Do the Poms Host Fund Raisers?
Yes, however fund raisers take time and shared efforts from everyone to be successful. Beginning this year, team members, parents and the sponsor should all participate in at least one fund raiser per year. Fundraising information will be discussed and voted on at team and parent meetings.
Do Poms Support Cheerleaders?
The NHS Poms fully support all athletes. This year every member of the Poms team will be required to attend at least one cheerleading competition. Both Poms and Cheerleaders represent a solid unifying spirit squad at Northwood High School. We fully support one another and petty disrespect of Cheerleaders from Poms will not be tolerated.
When Are Pom Tryouts?
Pom tryouts for the fall typically take place in May of the previous year. However, depending on the interest generated by students in the fall of the new school year, additional tryouts may take place at the discretion of the sponsor. We welcome all grades to tryout. Please be informed that we are a Varsity only squad and do not have a Junior Varsity team.
