ESOL

(Find ESOL Staff here.)

ESOL classes are for students who need extra help in learning English because it is not their native language. ESOL is scheduled for students instead of mainstream English and also reading if a level 1. There are 3 levels in middle school in MCPS.

Level 1 is the beginning level for students who need to develop basic vocabulary and sentence structure.

Level 2 is the intermediate level which focuses on writing skills and more complex grammar.

Level 3, the advanced level, concentrates on using the vocabulary, sentence structures and reading skills in producing essays, research papers and oral presentations in content areas.

The goal of ESOL is to prepare students to be successful in mainstream English as well as other content classes, so that their production of English is not an obstacle.
