Clubs at Newport Mill Middle School

Art Club 

The Art Club will allow artists to express themselves and be aware of the community.  In the first half of the year the club will concentrate on various projects around the school and the community.  During the second semester the artists will discover new talents and creativity that will help deepen existing strengths.

Board Games

Students will have the opportunity to relax with friends and play a variety of board games. Students will be able to participate in competitive as well as non-competitive games. They will be encouraged to bring some of their favorite games to share.

Environmental Club

Students will learn how to protect the environment and save money for Newport Mill Middle School by lessening the amount of energy the school uses on a daily basis.  They will work with teachers and building service workers to collect data about the school’s energy use.  In addition, students will help maintain a special "teaching aquarium" as well as organism habits in the classroom to help encourage and develop an interest in reading, writing, critical thinking, and science. Students will perform a variety of activities to aid in the care of plants and animals.

Engineering Club

The engineering club is a structured pre-college program dedicated to supporting and developing the interests, skills, and abilities of middle school students in science, technology, and engineering.  Also, students will work in teams to demonstrate their skills and abilities as they learn from and motivate each other.

Homework Help/Study Hall

The Homework Club/Study Hall provides students with a quiet place to work after school. At the homework club teachers will be available to assist students with their assignments as necessary. Students who complete their assignments early will be given the opportunity to study, read, or complete other school related tasks in a quiet work environment. At present we are still in the process of organizing this activity.

Literary Magazine Club

The Literary Magazine provides an excellent opportunity for students to enhance their creativity through writing. All students at Newport Mill will have the opportunity to write poems, short stories, and other literary works for submission to Mr. Ehrhardt.  During the spring months, the Literary Magazine staff will work on the layout of Newport Mill Literary Magazine. The magazine will be distributed to students at the school.

Reading Room 

The Reading Room offers a time and place for students to complete reading assignments from Advanced English classes (and other content classes) in a supportive setting.  We offer a quiet place with computer access and CD access to audio text.  This room encourages students (students with disabilities and English language learners) to maintain the rigorous pace of the reading assignments in the classroom and to utilize the supports available – audio books and teacher supported reading of on-grade level and advanced-grade level text.

Student Government Association (SGA)

The Student Government Association (SGA) provides students with the ability to better understand the democratic process, while becoming involved in school projects and initiatives. Elections are held for officers, and other students are encouraged to attend as part of the general assembly. The SGA sponsors great school-wide activities, such as community outreach programs, school dances, and school spirit days.

Additional Opportunities 

The Montgomery County Recreation Department (Rec Extra) sponsors many additional opportunities for students at Newport Mill Middle School.  These opportunities are publicized at the school through the activity sponsor.  Some of the activities that may be offered throughout the year include:
