Greetings from the PTSA!

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year! The MVMS PTSA is gearing up for another busy year, and looking forward to new opportunities to support the MVMS community. Our first goal of the new school year is to reduce the number of fundraisers – times are tough for everyone, and we want to support the community to the best of our ability. To that end, our primary fundraiser will continue to be the MVMS PTSA Discount Savings Card. We will also continue the no-cost fund raisers, primarily the Giant Bonus Card, Safeway e-Scrip, Target and Box Tops for Education programs.

Another one of our goals this year is to increase PTSA membership to include every family and every staff member. During the past school year the PTSA held several events, including two book fair family nights, a family picnic, an open-forum articulation night for incoming 6th graders and a book swap. Our PTSA meetings included speakers on cyberbullying, Ed-line and social networking, an SSL tutorial, and the opportunity to meet the WMHS principal. Staff was recognized with several meals, free massages, raffles and Monday morning coffees. The PTSA honored several staff requests for equipment, including instruments and music software for the Music Department, calculators for the Math Department, and equipment for the Drama Department. We funded incentives for the after-school program, snacks for MSA testing, registration for two staff members to attend a bullying seminar, and provided two Watkins Mill HS students with $300 scholarships each. We also supplemented classroom libraries by donating $750 of Scholastic books to the school.

During the coming year, we’d like to continue to support students and staff at the same level, as well as provide programs from outside venues and publish a school directory, available only to PTSA members. Student PTSA members will have the opportunity to earn SSL hours during PTSA events.

To continue these efforts, we need everyone’s support. Whether you are able to support the school by volunteering on a regular basis throughout the year, or during one event the entire year, you will make a difference. Your financial, moral and volunteer support are critical to the efforts of the PTSA in supporting our school community. Please join me this year in supporting the efforts of the PTSA, the staff and the entire MVMS community.
