What is SSL?

Student Service Learning (SSL) is a county-wide program. Students in Montgomery County are required to accumulate 75 Service Learning hours in order to graduate from high school. Students who earn substantially more are eligible for awards and scholarships.

How Do I Do It?

Hours are earned through work with non-profit, tax-exempt organizations. Some of these have already been pre-approved by MCPS; others require prior approval by completing a Special Activity Form.

Students may begin earning SSL hours after completing 5th grade. Upon completion of an approved community service activity, students complete a Verification Form, and submit it, along with the Special Activity Form if appropriate, to the Counseling Office.

Forms must be submitted by September 30th for hours worked during the summer, and by the end of each semester in which hours were worked. Hours will appear on the quarterly report card.

Successful completion of Grade 6 science, Grade 7 English, and Grade 8 social studies provides students with up to 30 hours toward the required 75 hours because these courses are infused with student service learning.

Who Can Help Me?
