Choice Process

Families of Grade 5 students who reside inside the Middle School Magnet Consortium attendance area* will receive a Choice form through the mail in late November. Choice forms for Grade 5 students who reside outside the Consortium will be available on this Web site and at any MCPS elementary school, beginning in late November (for Round 1 of the Choice process) and late February (for Round 2 of the Choice process). The application will provide parents with the opportunity to select and rank order the middle schools of their choice, based on the magnet programs of interest. Questions about the Choice process should be directed to the Division of Consortia Choice and Application Program Services (DCAPS) at 301 592 2040.

Choice forms are due December 7, 2007. All Grade 5 students who attend an MSMC elementary school will return their Choice form to their current elementary school. Choice forms for all other Grade 5 students must be mailed or delivered by the due date to the DCCAPS, Spring Mill Field Office, 11721 Kemp Mill Road, Silver Spring, MD 20902. All students who participate in the MSMC Choice process in Round 1 will receive information about school assignment or selection in late February. For those who participate in the Choice process during Round 2, information about school assignment or selection will be mailed in late April. Once assignment/selection letters from Round 2 of the Choice process is complete, request of change of school assignment or selection may be appealed by sending a letter of appeal to the director of DCCAPS.

MCPS staff will provide information about the Choice process and magnet programs at Parent Information Meetings in October and November. Each meeting will provide information on courses, program components, and details of the Choice process.

*Attendance areas for the MSMC include addresses that feed into one of the following elementary schools: Bel Pre, Brookhaven, Georgian Forest, Harmony Hills, Sargent Shriver, Strathmore, Viers Mill, Weller Road, and Wheaton Woods.
