Parent-Student Reunification Plan

Next week we will conduct our first Code Red/Code Blue drill of the year.  As part of our overall crisis plan there is a parent-student reunification plan in place should parents and students need to be reunified on-campus or off campus.  We’d like to take this opportunity to review this process with the community so that everyone is properly informed and prepared should we actually have to institute these steps.

If necessary it is conceivable that certain crisis situations my involve dismissing students when bus transportation is not possible.  In these instances, parents/legal guardians must enter the building via the double doors in the cafeteria.  Near the stage there will be tables staffed by school personnel.  Tables will be organized alphabetically by student last name.  Parents and guardians should report to the appropriate table to sign-out students.  Proper identification will be needed before we release students to any adult.  This is especially important if someone other than the parent/legal guardian is picking up a child.  We will use the yellow cards and the completed Alternate Transportation forms received to determine who may sign out a student.  Staff manning the tables will notify the main office and students will be sent to the APR for dismissal.  Adults and children will exit the building using the side entrance near the carpool lane.  Should we need to evacuate the school, the parent reunification site is Saint Mary’s Pavilion.  MCPS will provide buses to transport students to St. Mary’s and students will be seated by class with their teacher.  Parents should once again follow the signs posted to the reunification area, where school staff will monitor the signing-out process and verify that students are released to an appropriate adult.  Once verified, students will be notified and released.

In each instance, student safety is our primary concern.  If you need to update the information we already have regarding which adults have permission to sign-out your child, please contact the school as soon as possible.  Likewise, if there are custody concerns or changes in the legal agreements related to the release of your child, it is imperative that the office be notified and that a copy of the most recent court order or legal document be provided to the school.  In addition, should we need to institute our reunification plan, we ask for your patience with the process in advance.  Our staff trains to remain calm and composed during an emergency.  However, we know that in a non-drill situation, anxieties may be higher.  Our goal is to reunite parent and child in a timely and orderly fashion.  However, even though we are a small school, I foresee that there will be waiting periods at sign-out tables and while student’s transition from their classrooms to the All Purpose Room.  To maintain the safety of each child and the integrity of the reunification procedure, parents are required to remain in the All-Purpose until reunited with their child. Your cooperation will help us make the reunification process effective and efficient.  If you have any questions regarding this plan, please contact Mrs. Duranko.
