The Monocacy Gallery of Fine Art

It is Hispanic Heritage Month and the art program at Monocacy is off to a great start. The first project for First, Third, Fourth and Fifth graders had them learning about and creating art in the style of Hispanic artists and cultures.

Kindergarten through 5th grade are designing and decorating their own Sketch Book Cover using the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. This sketchbook will remain at school for use and will be brought home at the end of the year. Written and verbal assessments concerning art will be used throughout the year also and be reflected in the Responding to Art portion of student grades. Please check the back of your student’s artwork when it comes home for, when possible, there is a sheet for better understanding, review and discussion about each project. Regardless, students are encouraged to use art vocabulary and describe art techniques, elements and principles when discussing artwork.

Other projects underway:      

  • Kindergarten has been making "log cabin" collages to represent Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House in the Big Woods. Currently they are cutting, identifying and arranging basic shapes to make a collage in primary colors.
  • Second Graders have made Symmetric Butterflies and decorated them in symmetric designs. Students demonstrated physical and design symmetry in. They drew from observation and used organic and geometric shapes. Students are also drawing a pumpkin patch using three techniques for showing distance is a composition. They will use the wax resist technique with watercolor paint to finish their compositions.
  • Fourth Graders are now making a torn paper mountain range to begin their Landscape Unit in Art.
  • Fifth Graders will use blind contour line to draw guitars from observation in the style of Picasso from Spain.

First graders made the symmetric shape of a sombrero by cutting on a fold. The use and location of where Sombreros are worn was discussed and typical drawings and patterns of Mexico decorated their creations. Next first graders made paper sculptures and will use this lesson to inspire designs and decorate their Paper Mask in the coming weeks.
 

 
Third Grade students made art in the surrealist style of Spanish artist Joan Miro. They drew a freeform line to express the music they listened to and then identified creative biomorphic shapes with details and color. Students titled their work and several have been displayed. Third graders are beginning their portrait unit using correct placement of features and other details to add expression.
 

 

 
Fourth and Fifth Graders were given a drawing exercise to observe an animal and draw it in detail using basic shapes and contour lines. It was connected to culture and history by turning it into a Mola similar to the style used in Panama, Central America.
