MLK MS PE Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs Unit  - Grade 8 


Mastery Objective – Students will be able to classify a variety of psychoactive drugs and identify the consequences of their use and abuse. 

 Directions:   

Students will work in assigned groups of two. 

1. Students will randomly select their topic using the “Dart Board”.  Available topics include: 

  • Marijuana  
  • Cocaine 
  • Methamphetamines 
  • Steroids 
  • Heroine 
  • Alcohol 
  • Club Drugs(Ecstasy, MDMA, Molly) 
  • Inhalants 
  • Hallucinogens (Mushrooms, Acid, LSD) 

 2. Go to one of the Teacher approved web sites and collect information about your topic.  You will need to collect information about: 

  • Drug name 
  • Street names 
  • How it is made 
  • Method of use 
  • Short term & Long term effects of the drug 
  • Risks & Dangers associated with the drug 
  • Statistics about the drug and its use 

Your group will need to create a Power Point Presentation that consists of a minimum of 7 slides and a maximum of 10 slides. 

Groups will be expected to present their project to the entire class with all members of the group demonstrating a working knowledge of the information as well as the presentation.  Members will need to complete an “Assignment of Duties” that assigns responsibility for each slides Research, Creation, and Presentation. 

Power Point Presentations are expected to be an example of your best work.  Students should strive to make their presentation “POP”.  Utilizing the Power Point Tips and Tricks information at your work station can make your presentation stand out above the rest!

Monday         December 9, 2013 – Group Selection, Topic Selection, Data collection, and Group Work Evaluation Sheet Exit Card 

Tuesday         December 10, 2013 – Assignment of Duties and Data collection 

Wednesday December 11 – Power Point Slides 1 – 4 Due 

Thursday      December 12 – Power Point slides 5 – 10 Due 

Friday            December 13 – Final Touches, Presentation Practice, & and Assignment of Duties Due
