SUMMER READING PROGRAM 2009

While summer means the end of classes and daily lessons, as well as time for much needed relaxation and fun, don’t let your brain melt away completely over these enjoyable weeks and months. Let a book be your companion over your summer vacation!

Research shows the advantages of frequent and thoughtful reading, which allows you to get a mental head-start on the school year and prepares you for the academic tasks you will face in the fall. But summer reading shouldn’t be a chore. It’s an opportunity to explore a new author, a favorite genre, or a book you’ve always wanted to pick up but simply couldn’t find the time to. It’s a chance to connect with your local library, spend some quality alone time, or start a conversation with friends or family.

  • Pick one (or more!) Get recommendations from your family, your friends, or your teachers. Pick a book that will challenge you mentally but also engage you emotionally.
  • Plan time to track down your book. Don’t wait until the last minute; waiting lists at libraries can sometimes be weeks long, and sometimes books take longer to read than you expect.
  • When you get to Magruder in the fall, your English teacher will ask you to write about your book(s). You may be asked about themes, characters, setting, or connections to other books you’ve read. To prepare for this activity, read carefully; you might consider taking notes, so that you remember details, characters, and important ideas when you have to think about it in class.

If you are taking AP English next year, either as a junior or as a senior, your teachers have specific expectations for your reading, as well as some AP English Language & Composition follow-up assignments you should complete before the start of school in August.

Make it your summer resolution to lose yourself in a good book. The reading habits you develop now will get you ready not only for the upcoming school year, but for a lifetime of literacy.
