Performing, creating, and responding to music are the fundamental music processes in which humans engage. Students learn by doing. Singing, playing instruments, moving to music, and creating music enable them to acquire musical skills and knowledge that can be developed in no other way. Learning to read and notate music gives them a skill with which to explore music independently and with others. Listening to, analyzing, and evaluating music are important building blocks of musical learning. Further, to participate fully in a diverse, global society, students must understand their own historical and cultural heritage and those of others within their communities and beyond. Because music is a basic expression of human culture, every student should have access to a balanced, comprehensive, and sequential program of study in music. 5th Grade Holiday Concert! I hope everyone will put Tuesday, December 2, 2008 on their calendars for our 5th Grade Holiday Concert! The Luxmanor Fifth Grade Chorus is outstanding this year. The students are working hard on memorizing their music and polishing their songs. Please join us at 7:00 p.m. to listen to their amazing, beautiful sound! Happy Holidays to all! Kindergarten students have been listening to "The Carnival of the Animals" by Camille Saint-Saens. They are learning about high and low sounds and moving to music. First Grade students are learning about loud and soft, fast and slow and how to keep a steady beat to a song when they play a classroom instrument. They are also listening to the different animals conveyed by "The Carnival of the Animals." Second grade students are learning about the musical terms, piano and forte, and lento and allegro. They just completed their field trip to Strathmore where they attended a concert. They will also play a steady beat as a bourdon on an xylophone. Third grade students will be able to conduct a piece of music in a meter of two and is studying the musical terms, dynamics, tempo and articulation. They are also learning the recorder and they are doing quite well. We are beginning to study how to read notes. Fourth grade students will be studying the recorder and will play songs and learn to read music notation. Fifth grade students are learning about the pentatonic scale, musical terms and to play ostinatos on the mallet instruments.
