Welcome to all our new students and families from all over the world! Our Luxmanor community includes families from Argentina, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Belarus, Chile, China, El Salvador, France, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Japan, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Russia, Russian Federation, Senegal, Serbia, South Korea, Sudan, Singapore, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, and Vietnam. As of September 25, 2008, there are 59 ESOL students.

Parents wondering “When does school start?” or “When will my child receive a report card?” can get their questions answered by calling the MCPS call center at 301-309-6277 from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. weekdays except holidays. Non-English speakers may call the following hotlines:

MCPS
ESOL MISSION STATEMENT
The intent of the MCPS ESOL Program is to provide high quality instruction, assessment, counseling, and parent outreach activities that enable English language learners and American Indian students to demonstrate successful academic performance across all curricular areas. More information (translated in various languages) about the Montgomery County Public Schools ESOL Program can be found at the MCPS Division of ESOL Instruction Web site.
Beginning and Low Intermediate students receive ESOL instruction for thirty-five to forty-five minutes four days a week.
High Intermediate and Advanced students receive ESOL instruction two - three times a week.
Below please find the ESOL objectives for quarter two by grade and ESOL level. The level of difficulty for each objective is adjusted to students’ ESOL levels.
* Please note that CT means Common Task (what students are expected to do independently (after instruction) for assessment.
KINDERGARTEN
Listening:
CT1: Demonstrate comprehension of a variety of oral instructions, questions, and prompts.
CT2: Demonstrate comprehension of vocabulary presented orally in context.
Speaking:
CT1: Express personal information and ideas.
CT2: Use vocabulary to communicate effectively in speaking.
- Use standard English grammar to speak clearly and accurately.
- Speak clearly using comprehensible pronunciation and intonation.
Reading:
- Identify letter sounds.
- Recognize rhyming words.
- Recognize that a sentence is a group of words put together to express an idea.
- Use strategies to make meaning from text.
Writing:
CT2 Write about a personal experience.
- Write to describe and compare characteristics of people, places, and things.
- Use subject-verb and noun-pronoun agreement.
- Use appropriate verb tenses.
- Use appropriate word order in statements and questions.
FIRST GRADE
Listening:
