DECEMBER NOTES FROM YOUR COUNSELOR…………………………gloria silverberg

Imagine what you can be… Our Career Day 2008 was a huge success thanks to the many parent and community volunteers who shared their careers with our students.

We had been preparing for Career Day this month in our Counseling Class Guidance lessons.  We have explored the ideas of Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences, that we are all smart in different ways.  Some of the areas of intelligence he includes are:

Verbal-Linguistic, Logical-Mathematical, Musical-Rhythmic, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, Visual-Spatial, Naturalist, Bodily-Kinesthetic, and Spiritual.

The students have assessed themselves and identified areas of strength and areas of interest.  They are already two steps ahead in planning their own career paths!  We have had a lot of great discussions about how school can be a means to an end…their careers!  In addition, we have talked about the importance of skill and interest identification in having job satisfaction.   We also learned about some very famous people who did not perform well in school, but overcame learning obstacles to become very successful in life.  This is why we can never give up on believing in our children and helping them to achieve their dreams and goals!

The NetSmartz presentation to our 5th graders was very informative!  Ms. Donovan asked how many students have parental control on their computers, and most of the students raised their hands.  Unfortunately, many of those same students said they know how to navigate around these controls.  She advises adult supervision at this stage to protect children from predators as well as preventing rumors and harassment concerns.  The website for NetSmartz has many of the videos and information that she shared with the 5th graders, should you want o see them for yourselves.  The website, NetSmartz.org is an interactive, educational safety resource from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children that creates age-appropriate activities to help teach children how to be safer while online and in the real world.

I want to thank the parents and our community members who have so graciously volunteered their time to share their careers with us on Career Day.  Your children were so proud and thrilled to have you speak! In addition, I would like to thank the Luxmanor Staff for giving me their instructional time for the morning, and to my interns Alexi New and Amanda Powell for assisting me!
