Luxmanor ES - Back to School 2017

Dear Luxmanor Families,

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year.  We are very excited about the beginning of the school year!  I hope that you have enjoyed a restful and relaxing summer.  The beginning of school will be here before we know it and it has been a busy summer planning for the upcoming school year.  I would like to welcome all of our new families as you join the Luxmanor community.  Our staff looks forward to meeting all of you and working with your children.

The first day of school will be Tuesday, September 5, 2017.  All students and parents are encouraged to meet their classmates and teacher at the Open House on Thursday, August 31, 2017 from 2:00 - 2:45 p.m.  Class lists will be posted outside the main entrance to Luxmanor, as well as outside the classrooms on the day of the Open House.  Following the open house, the PTA will host a popsicle social in the AP room from 2:45-3:30 p.m.

As I informed you in the spring, there are a few changes in our staff for the upcoming school year.  Please join me in welcoming the following new staff members:

  • Lisa Wenzlaff, Attendance Secretary/Registrar
  • Elizabeth O'Kelly, 1 st Grade
  • Bert Delpierre, 3 rd  Grade
  • Christina Gorski McDermott, 3 rd Grade
  • Hanna Silnicky, 4 th  Grade
  • Brittany Drannan, 5 th  Grade
  • Julie Corrado, ESOL
  • Alexandra Sunter, Home School Model
  • Rachel Lynott, SCB
  • Rachel Hornyak, PEP
  • Gloria Bernart, PEP Para
  • Becky Mangan, PEP Parent Educator
  • Judith Segal, PEP Speech Pathologist

In addition to our new staff members above, Mrs. Flores also accepted a position at another MCPS school and I am excited to inform you that Mrs. Barbara McGolrick has moved from her former position as the school's attendance secretary into the administrative secretary position.  Mrs. McGolrick has been with Luxmanor for over ten years and I know that she will be outstanding in her new position and the service she provides our community.

Listed below are the Luxmanor classroom teachers for the 2017-2018 school year with their teaching assignments as of the date of this letter.  I will continue to monitor our enrollment as we approach the start of school.  Our staffing is based on projected student enrollment. In some cases, it may become necessary for staffing changes to occur in schools if student enrollment comes in below the county projection.  If there is a need to make an adjustment in staffing based on actual enrollment, I will do my best to minimize the impact of these adjustments.  I will keep you informed and alert you of any changes that may occur at our school.

In alignment with the school system focus, Luxmanor staff members will continue to work together to close the achievement gap between our lowest achieving students and our highest achieving students.  On August 21 st , I will attend a meeting to hear from our new superintendent, Dr. Smith, where he will share his vision and plan for how the school system will continue to focus on this critical work.

As a reminder, the official start of our day is 9:00 a.m.  Students may arrive at school at 8:40 a.m. and school dismisses at 3:25 p.m.

Luxmanor's revitalization plan remains on schedule.  Our construction plan will be presented to the Board of Education on August 31, 2017.  We are currently scheduled for 2:50 p.m., although there is a possibility the time could change.  All community members are invited to attend this meeting to hear the plans being presented to the Board.  All Board meeting agendas, including specific times, can be found at the Board of Education: Meetings page of the MCPL website.

Please use the links below to find information about general school policies and procedures as well as the opening of school.  Please look for information about school programs in regular flyers, in the principal's newsletter, in the PTA Luxletter and on the web on our home page.

Best wishes for a restful and refreshing last few weeks of summer.  We are looking forward to a rewarding year as we work together to build success for every student!

Sincerely,

Ryan D. Forkert
