Masks - This display represents the work of our first grade students. Each child created a three dimensional mask, using a variety of paper sculpture techniques. We began our lesson discussing how a face or mask is symmetrical or the same on both sides. From folded paper we created a face shape. During the following sessions we added surface designs using marker, oil pastel and watercolor. The final step involved adding three dimensional paper forms and shaping the mask from being flat or two dimensional to a three dimensional form.

Butterflies - In conjunction with the study of the life cycles of butterflies these students created butterfly kite designs. We created these designs using white drawing paper, black crayons and watercolor crayons. In art class we focused on how artists use nature as inspiration for their work. We observed that butterflies are symmetrical and created symmetrical designs for our work. We studied the patterns, shapes and colors found in nature and incorporated them into our projects. Our finished works are nature inspired, symmetrical and absolutely beautiful!

Portraits - This display represents a study of portrait drawing crated by our third grade students. The lesson began with a discussion about portraits and the location of facial features. We looked at the symmetrical arrangement of facial features as well. Following the discussion, we observed the stylistic elements found in the portraits of ancient Egypt. Each student began a portrait in pencil and completed the work in oil pastel. The portraits were cut and mounted on a background that was decorated with images and designs reminiscent of the art from Ancient Egypt.

Action Figure Collages - This display represents a study of color, pattern and figure drawing. As we began the lesson, we looked at the contemporary artist Keith Haring. His work is filled with action and pattern. We continued with a session on gesture drawing to help understand proportion in the human figure. We made a stencil from our gesture drawings to create multiple figures to form a pattern on a background color. Some students used painted paper for their collage work while others used patterned paper. The final results are beautiful and exciting.
