The following criteria must be met for this activity to be approved for student service learning hours:
- The plan meets the MCPS definition of student service learning, which includes three phases: preparation, action, and reflection.
- The activity will be completed outside of the school day.
- The supervisor who will sign the verification form, MCPS Form 560-51: Verification
of Student Service Learning Activity is 18 years or older and is not
a member of the student's immediate family.
- The application has been signed by a parent of guardian.
- The sponsor complies with all federal, state, and local laws that forbid discrimination on the basis of race, creed, sex, age, disability, religion, and/or national origin.
- The sponsor prohibits verbal abuse, threats, or physical violence directed against others.
- The sponsor prohibits sexual harassment.
- The student will perform the actvitiy without salary or compensation.
- The activity does not endorse any religious and or political beliefs. (Clarification)
- The activity must not be performed in support of profit-making, except that the for-profit nursing homes and childcare centers may be approved so long as the volunteer job involves direct services to the residents or children.
- The activity site must have adequate liability insurance coverage.
Additional Stipulation
Students may not be credited with SSL hours for performing community service hours at the direction of a court.
