October 4 & 5 -- Montgomery Parks Harvest Festival, Derwood Maryland,. It's time for our annual 2 day fall festival celebrating what "Life on the Farm" was like at the turn of the century, back in the early 1900's. Held at one of our prettiest historic properties in Montgomery County, we need over 100 volunteers to help our park naturalists and historians show our visitors what crafts, machinery, food, and games were like back then during the fall harvest time. This is a family oriented activity that is very popular, so we need lots of volunteers 14 and older for one or both days! SSL approved. Lunch and a free t-shirt are provided. Call Lynn or Jayne at Montgomery Parks Volunteer Services Office at 301-495-2464.
October 25 -- Community Service Day Join with thousands of your fellow county residents working on projects to improve our community in celebration of Montgomery County’s 22nd Annual Community Service Day, Saturday October 25th, with Sunday projects as well. There are many ways to get involved: Plan a clean up project at your school or join an existing Community Service Day project with a local non-profit. For a complete listing of Community Service Day projects and tips on signing on and planning your own project, visit www.montgomerycountymd.gov/volunteer or phone 240-777-2600. Requirements
Students in Montgomery County Public Schools must complete
60 hours of student service learning (SSL) (75 SSL hours are required beginning
with the Class of 2011) before graduating. SSL hours can be completed through
classes, school sponsored activites, and in the community.
In School . . .
Some SSL hours can be earned through classes in middle school and high school.
Hours can also be earned through school-sponsored projects and co-curricular
programs such as student government, an environmental club, etc. Make sure
you talk to the SSL coordinator at Hoover to find out which activities are
apporved for SSL.
In the Community . . .
Many students complete their SSL requirement by working with a community organization.
You can use the Youth Guide to Volunteer Opportunities publication
(which can be found in the guidance office) or the Montgomery
County Volunteer Center a website that lists resgistered SSL agencies.
If you want to do community service that is not on the approved list, complete
an Application for Special Activity, and work with
the SSL coordinator at Hoover to have it approved before you do the work.
In addition to the SSL activities listed in the Youth Guide to Volunteer Opportunities, W/E Volunteer, a program of the Montgomery County Volunteer and Community Service Center has a monthly calendar of group projects that are approved for SSL credit.
