Highland View ES Penny Drive

Highland View ES penny drive

If you were a recent visitor to Highland View ES, you might have wondered why empty gallon jugs were located in every classroom. The PTA, faculty, staff and students are extending a helping hand by collecting pennies to support children who are in desperate need in Afghanistan.  During these long cold winter months, the babies and small children living in refugee camps struggle to stay warm.  We have learned that hot water bottles are needed.  When they are wrapped in blankets, the bottles help the children stay warm.

During the penny drive, teachers have noticed many acts of generosity. For example, Ms. Applewhaite met one of her second grade students at the grocery store.  His family was purchasing a cookie mix for a bake sale to raise money for the penny drive. Another student brought in his entire piggy bank.

Students gather to check the progress of the penny drive.

As global citizens, our students are learning that their cooperative efforts can make a significant difference in the lives of young children.

The Highland View community earned $1312.81 which we will use to purchase 291 hot water bottles for the youngsters in Afghanistan.
