Good Queen Bess Visits Highland View
Students at Highland View had an audience with Good Queen Bess. Transported directly from the 1500's from her castle in England, Good Queen Bess shared information about how people lived during her reign as queen.
Proper Etiquette Please
To show proper respect to the Queen, women curtsied and the men bowed showing their calf muscle, a symbol of their manliness.
Cuisine
The English subjects benefited from a lengthy seacoast and enjoyed a bounty of seafood, as well as chicken, turkey, and vegetables such as peas.
The Sporting Life
Queen Bess also explained why the game of football was outlawed. It was a dangerous sport and men could be mortally wounded. Instead, villagers participated in archery, fencing, hunting and jousting. The townspeople also enjoyed attending the theatre. Good Queen Bess taught a small group of students the Galliard, a French dance. The word means lively in French.
Alas, the royal subjects returned back to their natural state and bid a fond adieu to her royal majesty, Good Queen Bess.
Many thanks to Kendra LaDuca and Sue Luck for coordinating this assembly, and for the community's participation in our PTA fundraisers that makes our cultural arts actvities possible.
