What We're Studying
Grade 5 students learned in Art about the famous artist, Vincent Van Gogh. After reading about his life and art, we studied some of his artwork, particularly his self-portraits.
Our Work
In the first step of creating our self portraits, we learned how to draw our facial features (eyes, nose, mouth, ears, eyebrows, hairline) by using the lines of proportion. With the use of mirrors, the students practiced how to blend the colors of oil pastels to create the color of our skin tone, highlights and shadows of the face and hair. The background we created by the student's choice of analogous color scheme and to incorporate a design that has visual rhythm-similar to Vincent VanGogh's famous painterly style.
