School Programs

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

ESOL provides small group instruction of bilingual students. The major goals of the ESOL program are:

  • Teaching students English to successfully function in the regular classroom
  • Providing intensive basic skills instruction to those who have had little or no previous schooling
  • Counseling those who are adjusting to a new school and community environment
  • Assessing those suspected of having a handicapping condition.
  • Minimizing linguistic and cultural barriers to enable parents to participate in their children’s education

Gifted and Talented

All Grade 2 students are screened for gifted and talented during the second semester of the school year. Grade 3-5 students who are new to MCPS or who have been recommended for re-screening (by parents and/or school staff) are screened during the first semester of each year. The data gathered on each student is used to provide appropriate differentiated instruction.

Students are challenged to extend themselves and work to their full potential. Students are provided dynamic learning environments that challenge them to develop their intellectual power, creativity, and sense of self. All teachers are knowledgeable about how able students learn effectively and will draw on a rich repertoire of innovative instructional strategies to support their students' achievement.

Pre-K Program

The Pre-K program provides education for four-year-old children. The goal of the Pre-K program is to provide learning experiences and opportunities that help children develop abilities and learn concepts necessary for successful school performance.

Mathematics

The goal of the Glen Haven Elementary mathematics program is for all students to achieve mathematical proficiency by developing both conceptual understanding and procedural fluency. The end result is for all students to have the ability to think and reason mathematically and use mathematics to solve problems in authentic contexts.

The concepts of mathematics are organized under six strands: Algebra/Patterns/Functions, Geometry, Number Relationships and Computation, Measurement, Statistics and Probability. These concepts are developed through the four mathematical processes – Problem Solving, Communication, Reasoning and Connections.

Reading/Language Arts

Glen Haven Elementary School follows Montgomery County 's Reading/Language Arts Instructional Guides based on the Balanced Literacy approach to reading and writing instruction. Each grade level spends at least 90 minutes each day on reading instruction and at least 40 minutes on writing instruction.

In addition to the required reading instruction, many of our students also benefit from an additional 30 to 40 minutes of reading intervention. Second and third graders are instructed using Horizons Fast Track program which is designed to strengthen the decoding and comprehension skills of struggling readers. Fourth and fifth grade students are instructed using the Corrective Reading program which is also designed to strengthen decoding and comprehension skills, but progresses at a faster pace and is designed for use with older students.

Special Education

LAD (Learning and Academic Disabilities) teachers and paraeducators use a variety of instructional models and strategies to meet the individual needs of the students in the LAD classes. These students require special services primarily as a result of learning and/or behavioral needs that affect performance in one or more areas of mathematics, reading, or written language. LAD classes are an integral part of Glen Haven Elementary and the students participate in all school activities.

The School/Community-Based Program (SCB)

The School/Community-Based Program (SCB) is grounded in the premise that all students are capable of learning regardless of the extent of their disability. The SCB provides and focuses individualized instruction in functional life skills such as personal management, functional academics, community training, communication, socialization and vocational training.

SCB serves students with moderate, severe or profound mental retardation and multiple disabilities. Students typically have significant needs in the areas of communication, personal management and socialization.

SCB students are a cohesive part of Glen Haven Elementary School and are mainstreamed and included in general education classes and activities.
