Art Club

The Art Club is a voluntary after school program open to all children in grades 3-5 who would like to experience a wide variety of art activities.

Arts Festival

Art and music combine to make a wonderful festival.  Student art works are displayed throughout the school building for all to enjoy.  The Glen Haven Chorus performs songs from many different cultures at an assembly for the students and at an evening performance for the parents and community to enjoy.

Chorus

The Glen Haven Chorus is open to all 4th and 5th grade students interested in a high level of singing performance. Although there is no audition required to join chorus, students must demonstrate excellent behavior and a commitment to rehearsal standards. The chorus meets weekly during the school day.

Drama Club

The Drama Club is open to all fourth and fifth grade students who are interested in the many aspects of theater. Throughout the year, students will work on acting, singing and dancing skills as they prepare for a spring musical production. While every student will have a part in the production, they will be expected to adhere to a high standard of behavior and make a commitment to attend rehearsals. The Drama Club will meet once weekly from 3:45 until 4:45 p.m., with dress rehearsals in April and May.

CT Technology Club

The Critical Thinkers (CT) Technology Club is open to grades 1 - 5 and is designed to challenge our students and expand their critical thinking skills beyond the classroom. We will create technology products, review math and reading concepts, and develop logic and strategies. The activities will require students to compute in their heads and think creatively. The CT Technology Club meets on Mondays from 3:40 - 4:30 p.m.

The Eagle Newspaper

The Newspaper Club puts out two issues a year: fall and spring. The Newspaper Club meets once a week during school from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Each issue takes about five to six weeks to prepare with a short break between issues. Students must be able to write, edit and type their own articles. The Newspaper Club is for students who like to write and report on various subjects. Also welcomed are fiction articles from students who enjoy writing but do not have time to be on the newspaper staff.

Eagle Savings

Working in partnership with the Montgomery County Teachers’ Federal Credit Union (MCT), the Glen Haven Eagle Savings is operated by students with the assistance of MCT employees. Students may open a savings account at the “Eagle Savings Branch.” They receive their own passbook and monthly statement and earn interest each month on their savings. Students serve as bank tellers, assistant tellers and customer service representatives.

GHES Academy

The GHES academy was instituted by grade level teams of teachers to address the needs of struggling students. Teachers in the Academy work with groups of students before, during, and after school to provide the extra support that is needed to help students become proficient in reading and math.

Instrumental Music

Instrumental Music is offered to all 4th and 5th grade students. Students may choose to play flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, baritone saxophone, violin or cello.

In the first year of instruction, students learn to produce sound and read notes and rhythm in musical notation. In the second year of instruction, students gain more technical mastery of their instrument. Second year students play in larger ensembles and develop the more complex skill of group playing. All students perform in the winter and spring concerts.

Media Center Assistants

Media Center Assistants are 4th and 5th grade students who help with various jobs in the Media Center such as shelving books and reading to younger students.

Recycling / SERT Team

Students learn about why we recycle, what can be recycled, and how material is recycled and made into other objects.  Students communicate this information to other students and to the Glen Haven staff.  These students are responsible for collecting used paper and plastic bottles from each classroom and office on a weekly basis.  SERT (School Eco-Response Team) encourages efficient and responsible energy use by Montgomery County public schools. Students work with staff to implement energy savings strategies throughout the school to earn grants and awards.

Safety Patrols

The Glen Haven Safety Patrols consist of 5th grade students who have been nominated in February of their 4th grade year by teachers, staff, self or parents and/or guardians. They begin training in March and take over the outgoing 5th grade patrols in April.

Patrols are selected on the basis of the following characteristics:

  • Self-motivation
  • Exhibits responsibility
  • Ability to work cooperatively with peers and adult staff
  • Leadership qualities

The school-based safety patrol sponsor and a Montgomery County Police Officer assigned to Glen Haven through the police safety unit support our patrols. Meetings are held twice a month. Training continues as an ongoing process as the patrols sharpen their safety skills (through videos, lecture and active training). Gold badges are awarded on a monthly basis for outstanding service.

Safety patrols are assigned to inside hallways to assist students in moving through the school (before and after school), bus stops, street crossings, and parent drop-off posts.  Patrols are responsible for ensuring a safe transit to and from school each day.

Being a patrol is an important responsibility that must be taken seriously. Many of our students and families count on our patrols to make their walk to and from school each day a safe one.

Science and Mathematics Fair

Each spring a science fair is held to highlight learning in science and the integration of mathematics.  Students decide upon a question, research information, conduct an investigation, and communicate their findings of the investigation.  The investigation projects are displayed at an evening festival

Spanish Club

The Spanish Club is a program for students in grades 4 and 5.  Students meet every Friday during lunch and recess for 6 weeks twice a year.  Each group consists of 8 students per session.  The students pick Spanish names for themselves and practice conversational Spanish in a relaxed atmosphere.  The students do reading and writing activities in Spanish. They also learn about Spanish culture in different countries.  Students take home their folders at the end of the 6 weeks.

Student Government Association

The Student Government is an elected group of students who are responsible for promoting school spirit and awareness of others (through activities such as the canned food drive). Each 3rd through 5th grade class has representation with officers elected from the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades.

Technology Squad

The Technology Squad meets daily from 8:50 am to 9:30 am in the Technology Lab.  The appointed group of students assists with various technological school needs.  This is a group for students who have an interest in Information Technology (IT). The experiences in the club teach the students to remain open minded towards technological progress and become active critiquing members of the future's information society. We study computer parts and practice using all MCPS software. Some of the typical duties are managing ink usage log, planning weekly workloads, investigating staff help requests, setting up computers for meetings, and assisting students with technology projects.
