About Our School

Glenallan Elementary, built in 1966, is located along Randolph Road and Glenallan Avenue. The original site has grown to gain two small additions; the most recent addition opened in September 1992. Glenallan has continued to grow and is now over capacity with eight relocatable units on site. Glenallan has a student enrollment of 450 students; enrollment is projected to decrease slightly over the next few years.

Demographics

The student population at Glenallan represents the demographics of the Kennedy cluster - a socio-economically and culturally diverse community. Housing in the Glenallan community consists of several apartment complexes, detached homes, and townhouse developments. The free and reduced school lunch program serves 40% of our student population; approximately 160 students in grades kindergarten through grade four receive services through Title I support. ESOL services are provided to 12% of our student population.

School Programs

Glenallan has a staff of 61 professional and support positions. There are full time positions in reading, ESOL, art, music, physical education, counseling, resource, media, speech, math/technology support and staff development. We have part time positions in academic support teacher and Reading Recovery. The educational program includes kindergarten through fifth grade and two self-contained programs for students with learning disabilities.

Glenallan is proud to have initiated and/or implemented several programs to support the various needs of the students: student enrichment programs, student recognition, reading and math incentive programs, an English class for parents, character education, school-based writing prompts and rubrics, student service club, afterschool homework support, Reading Recovery,

Soar to Success, Hands-On-Equations, reduced class size initiatives in K-2, and "Gatorville," a living classroom project. Emphasis on improving mathematics and reading through quality teacher training, as well as monitoring student progress, has contributed to gains measured by MSPAP data.

Glenallan parents contribute to the educational program through volunteering, special project participation, and PTA. Parent enrichment activities include: Penny Collection, Jeopardy, International Festival, African American History Month, Book Fair, Hands on Science, Group Piano, FLES, after school math and homework programs, and a number of community events.

The school community is proud to have connections with Glenmont Shopping Center, University of Maryland, and Kennedy High School's LTI program and child development center. Currently Glenallan has a joint occupancy day care program serving approximately 50 students, including a midday kindergarten enrichment program.
