Principal's Message

Amy Bryant

Dear Germantown Families,

Although these past several months have been quite different from what we’ve ever experienced, we appreciate the spirit of collaboration and continued grace as we all strive to do our best with our “new normal” of virtual learning through January 29, 2021.

We are excited to begin this school year with our newly adopted Reading/Language curriculum, Benchmark.  Benchmark Advance is an innovative, comprehensive Reading/Language Arts program built to address key shifts in curriculum and instruction to meet the rigor and expectations of the reading standards.

Benchmark Advance provides comprehensive literacy instruction with effective resources for diverse learners.  It includes:

·  Reading mini-lessons that support close reading and metacognition (awareness and understanding of one's own thought processes)

·  Explicit phonics and word study instruction that builds strong foundational skills

·  Precisely leveled texts for small-group instruction and differentiation

·  Writing mini-lessons that support process writing and writing to sources

·  Parent resources

In the area of mathematics, we begin year 2 of implementing the Eureka Math curriculum. View a video of MCPS leadership discussing the Eureka and Benchmark curriculums here

We look forward to our continued relationship with the PTA!  Meghan Lowery continues to serve as the PTA President this year. The PTA is always looking for additional parents to support their work and I hope that you will become involved in their work. Even virtually, they work collaboratively with our school to fund programs and activities to foster a positive school environment.  Working together, we will increase the high standards of excellence, which are an important part of Germantown's tradition!

Thanks & take good care!
