English 11: Poetry Portfolio

Assignment: Develop a collection of published poetry centered around a particular theme and reflecting a range of poetic conventions and forms. Analyze each poem for its structural elements.

Due Date: TBD; Deadline: TBD

Requirements:
  • The collection must have at least six poems, each in a different style, by a different professional poet, on the selected theme. You may not use a poem assigned in class. You may not include anonymous poems. You may include no more than one song.
  • All poems in the collection should be on the same theme. Remember that a theme is not a word–it is the central idea and needs both a subject and a predicate. Write a one-paragraph introduction to your collection in which you describe the theme and introduce each poem (title, author, explanation of the way poem illustrates theme).
  • Each poem must be neatly and accurately typed in 12-point font on a separate sheet of paper. The title of the poem should be centered at the top of the page. The poet and the source of the poem (book/website) should be typed at the bottom of the page.
  • Find one example of each of the poetic devices listed below in your collection of poetry:
    alliteration assonance consonance hyperbole
    metaphor onomatopoeia personification simile
  • The poetic devices in each poem should be identified by either italics, underlining, bold type, a combination of any two, or colors. Do not use different type styles to identify devices. Please provide a clear key at the bottom of each poem showing which poetic device(s) is being identified on each page.
  • The finished product should be neatly stapled with a creative cover sheet. The cover sheet should contain your name, the date, and the class period. It should also contain a title for your collection of poetry that uses one of the poetic devices listed above.
