- Smithsonian Latino Center Announces Summer Leadership Opportunity: Young Ambassadors Program Fosters Next Generation of Latino Leaders
- The Smithsonian Latino Center is accepting applications for the 2011 Young Ambassadors Program being held June 19 through July 29. The Young Ambassadors Program is a national, interdisciplinary leadership development program for graduating high school seniors aimed at fostering pride in Latino culture and promoting higher education while exposing students to the arts, sciences and humanities via the Smithsonian Institution and its resources. Up to 24 students are selected for a weeklong seminar in Washington D.C., followed by a four-week internship in a museum or cultural institution in their community. Students meet and work with experts in the fields of history, science and the arts. The program also gives them practical and transferable knowledge and skills that can be applied to their education and future careers.

- National Institutes of Health, Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research,
Sponsored by the DANAC/Evans Corporation: Students selected for this internship from Gaithersburg High School (GHS) will join one of the many research laboratories for a minimum of eight weeks between late June and early August. At the end of the summer, students participate in the Summer Research Program Poster Day. This provides an opportunity for students to present their work before the NIH scientific community, parents and supporters. Each student selected for this program receives a sponsored monetary award. The application process begins in December of the student's junior year at GHS.

Applicant must be in their JUNIOR year of high school and have a strong interest in scientific research. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and must be at least 16 years old by May 31 of their JUNIOR year. Participants must have health insurance. - Current freshmen and sophomores: The Hispanic College Fund is bringing the Hispanic Youth Institute’s Kick-off program to Maryland this summer! More than 100 local Hispanic high school students and 200 community volunteers will come together for an event that raises the college-going trajectories of Hispanic students in the community. From June 21st - 24th, 2011, the participants of the 7th Annual Maryland Hispanic Youth Institute kick-off will convene in Towson University for a four-day, three-night program that allows them to develop a network of peers and mentors, learn about resources and tools for college, and develop a long-term career vision. Competitions will be held for $2,000, $1,000, and $500 scholarships in art, speech, talent and essay categories. Following the kick-off, students will participate in a variety of activities including local business functions and college and career fairs. The Hispanic College Fund will also stay in electronic contact with the students, providing them ongoing information about scholarships, internships, and college application deadlines. - The ARAMARK Career Training (ACT) Program provides high school students with summer internship opportunities at ARAMARK locations across the country. The goal of the program is for students to gain valuable, real-life work experience while exploring future career options. The program started in 2002 with 31 students working in Philadelphia and Detroit, and continues to grow today.
