Biotechnology Internships

Very special internship opportunities for MCPS students: Both applications are available at the DNA Resource Center, on the "Internship Programs for Students" page.

The University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute Center for Advanced Research in Biotechnology (CARB) / Center for Biosystems Research (CBR, Shady Grove) is supporting a local internship program in biotechnology research for students. The goal of this program is to provide an opportunity for highly motivated students to explore career opportunities in the field of biotechnology. Students will work with a research group headed by one of the CARB/CBR faculty members (program information can be found on the CARB/CBR web sites.

There are three options to this program. Priority placement will be given to students enrolled in the MCPS Biotechnology program (see below) and have taken or concurrent Molecular Biotechnology AND are applying for summer + academic year placement (see note below). There is a separate application for this program.

The University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute Shady Grove (Center for Advanced Research in Biotechnology) UMBI/CARB is supporting a full-year, local internship program in biotechnology research for students in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). The goal of this program is to provide an opportunity for highly-motivated students in the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE)-approved Biotechnology program to explore career opportunities in the field of biological science. Schools with approved MSDE Biotechnology programs are Northwest, Seneca Valley, Thomas Edison High School of Technology, Thomas Wootton, and Wheaton high schools. Students will work with a research group led by one of the UMBI faculty members. Information regarding current UMBI projects can be found on the UMBI web site.

The program will include a summer paid internship and a double period year long internship for school credit. In addition, this internship program meets the graduation requirement of a career pathway program by providing a completion option for the MSDE Biotechnology program.

Students not enrolled in this program are also encouraged to apply to be eligible for consideration for remaining placements.

  • Full year: Summer + Academic Year credit program: A one-year program of summer internship + academic year internship. Students may receive MCPS Science Internship course credit academic semesters and summer pay.
  • Summer only: Possible paid internship. Course credit may be arranged.
  • Academic Year only: Students must be enrolled in the MCPS Science Internship course and will receive course credit.
