At Gaithersburg Elementary we are committed to preparing our students for their future.  Since the 2004-2005 school year our student have received instruction in our computer lab.  Instructional standards come from the National Educational Technology Standards and Maryland Technology Literacy Standards to support indicators taught in classroom instruction with a focus on 21st century skills including communication and collaboration.

Highlights of our program

  • We participated in the Montgomery County Schools Media Festival for 3 years
  • We received Best Buy Teach Grants twice.
  • We have had guest speakers from IBM and the EPA.
  • We have dabbled in website creation, video production, and podcasting.

New Programs for the 2011-2012 School Year

  • Students in grades K-2 will take a computerized math assessment in the fall, winter and spring to measure academic progress.
  • Our school has joined a project called the Multi-Modal Universal Design for Learning that will change how we deliver instruction using 10 Promethean boards, 10 slates and classroom computers to make instruction more accessible to students.
  • Our school received a Toolbox for Education grant from Lowes to turn one of our courtyards into an eating area with picnic tables and another courtyard into a reading garden with 10 picnic benches.  These courtyards will also be the locations for our tabletop and butterfly gardens.
  • Participation in the Green Kids Program including lessons from Audobon Naturalists to make our school more environmentally aware.

Programs being Continued in the 2011-2012 School Year

  • Students in grades 3-5 will take computerized reading and math assessments in the fall, winter and spring to measure academic progress.
  • Schoolwide Invention Fair to encourage problem solving and an interest in engineering.
  • Schoolwide Science Inquiry Conference to give students the opportunity to design and execute a well designed science investigation including sharing the information and receiving feedback from peers.
