From the PTSA President…
Hello FSK Families!
My name is Dana Wilson, and I am the current president of the PTSA.
Summer is in full swing, and yet the new school year is right around the
corner! I am very excited about beginning our 2009/2010 journey at
the BRAND NEW Francis Scott Key Middle School. The building
and the grounds are simply gorgeous. It took a whole lot of work to
get the County to approve and finance this new building, and a whole l
ot of patience to endure a commute to Rockville during the two years
of construction…
Now that the school is complete, we can all take a deep breath and fully
appreciate the gift of a new state-of-the-art learning facility right here in
our community...for our children. It is awesome!
Okay, let’s get down to a little business…
As you all know, the County is facing budget cuts. This means that any
ancillary funding for student activities or teacher needs is almost non-existent.
That leaves it up to us…the parents. These are our kids, and this is
their school. We want them to have the kinds of activities and get-togethers
that make FSK a school that our kids cherish as part of their growing up experience.
This is how we can make it happen…
First, we all need to understand that in order to accomplish our goal we
need two things. We will be asking for parent donations to the school to
generate funding. The teachers work hard to be there for our children.
If there is something they need from us, it is our responsibility to answer
their call. This money is handled by the PTSA
(Parent/ Teacher/ Student Association) to ensure that the money donated
by the parents is allocated by the parents. Additionally, we need parent
involvement. This means showing up to events, and giving a hand when
you can. There are approximately 800 students at our school… that
equates to approximately 1600 parents
(much less grandparents, aunts, uncles, and the rest!). With so many
hands on deck, we could make this school amazing!
Family Night …
As PTSA president, one of my roles is to lead off our monthly Family Nights.
This event is on the second Tuesday of every month (beginning in October)
where the FSK community comes together to have dinner, hear a featured
department / community presentation, and listen to Mr. Minus discuss the
happenings and issues of the school. Personally, I think it is the best way
for all of us parents to come together and truly share in our children’s school
experience. It is important that as a parent, you try to be there. We have
babysitting for the kids, the gym for the FSK students to play together, food
for everyone, and priceless information to share with each other.
I Need Some Help…
There are some things that need to be done in order to make this PTSA and
Family Night run smoothly that I cannot do by myself. I need some help.
Primarily, I need five things:
- A Treasurer – someone to handle the donated funds
- Deposit money in the bank
- Write dispersement checks
- Prepare a treasurer report
- NOTE: training for this role is provided by the Montgomery County PTSA
- A Recording Secretary – someone to take notes on the information shared by Mr. Minus at our Family Nights
- Submit the notes for posting to the FSK web site and the parent listserve
- A Fundraising Coordinator – someone to handle the orders that come in from the fundraisers and give the money to the Treasurer
- A Fall Fundraiser is already in the works ( an EASY one)
- A Family Night Coordinator – someone to coordinate parent groups to purchase and bring food for the evening meal
- NOTE: Those who purchase the food for their particular monthly assignment will be reimbursed for the cost by the PTSA
- A Staff Appreciation Coordinator – someone who will organize and implement a Staff Appreciation function ( breakfasts have always been a hit!) at least twice during the year
- NOTE: Those who purchase the food for their particular event assignment will be reimbursed for the cost by the PTSA
- A Bit of Help from Everyone Else- Even if none of these assignments would work for you, there is always room for a helping hand.
Please mull it over, and think about what you, as a parent, would like to do to help participate in the coming together to help all of our children flourish here at Francis Scott Key. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or suggestions. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible this year!
Thank you,
Dana Wilson
