Introduction

This Spring we studied the trades of the early colonial settlements. We worked in small groups. After choosing a trade, we did research on the Internet on crafts and trades, requirements and skills needed for learning a trade, tools used, benefits to the community, and our personal interest in this trade. We made folders picturing an establishment where this trade might be done and showed tools we would use. Some students drew their tradesmen or craftsmen at work. We wrote a summary of our research. The summary was aimed at a Fifth grade audiance because the Fifth graders in our county also study American History and we wanted to be a resourse to them

The following pages show a representation of some of the best work from five World Studies classes. In some cases, the pictures and text came from separate projects. We hope you enjoy our work and will find it useful in your study of colonial trades.
