The often accepted dates can be argued. However, for the sake of that argument, this site places the fall of the Roman Empire as the beginning of the Dark Ages at about 400A.D. The shift to the Middle Ages seems to come about the time of Charlemagne which can be dated about 800 A.D. The end of the Middle ages and the beginning of the Renaissance varies across Europe. For the sake of simplicity, this site sets that key date at 1350 A.D.
