How to take notes
When you write yourself a list to
remind yourself of something you are taking notes. They help you
remember what you want to take when you go on a trip. They help you
remember what you want to buy at the store, and when you are writing
they help you remember what you want to say.
Note taking is very important. It's
not just writing down everything your read or hear. It is listening
carefully and writing down only the important ideas.
Here are some guidelines for taking
good notes:
PAY ATTENTION
- Be sure you are clear about the purpose of you notes.
- Read and listen carefully.
- Put the date and the topic on each page of notes.
- Write neatly but quickly.
BE BRIEF
- Select facts and details that are right for the purpose of your writing.
- Write down only the important ideas. Do not write in complete sentences.
- Summarize what you read or hear.
- Draw yourself a picture if it makes ideas easier.
- If you are writing to show that you understand something you need to include examples and explain how things work.
HELP YOURSELF STAY ORGANIZED
- Use a web or other graphic organizer.
- Use a highlighter pen to help you highlight the main point.
