Geographical Information on the Web - Lesson Plan

Title:   Butterflies and Moths

Grade Level(s):    Second Grade

Subject Area(s):   Science/Geography

Unit (s):    Study of Butterflies and Moths

Description:    This lesson will use internet web sites to reinforce learning about the life cycle and migration patterns of butterflies and moths.

Outcomes/Core Learning Goals:   (As per MCPS Curriculum Outcomes)

The Life Cycle of Butterflies & Moths:    Children will study the stages in the life cycle of  butterflies & moths, and observe the migration patterns of several types of butterflies & moths in the United States.

MCPS Geography Objectives:    Reinforce map skills using cardinal directions, relative distances and sizes, and symbols explained in a legend (key).

Media:    Students will become more familiar with the World Wide Web as a tool for research.

Time Frame:  Two 45 minute sessions in the Media Center or Classroom. Extensions can be done in the classroom. 

Materials/Technology:    Computers with internet access with the following sites previously bookmarked:

Monica the Monarch   (The Life Cycle of the Monarch Butterfly)

Monarch Buttefly Migration Map   (Map of the 1998 migration of the Monarch Butterfly back to the United States).

East Silver Spring Butterfly Project    (Local School site with information about butterflies and many other links to butterfly sites).

National Atlas    (USGS Map which shows the distribution of butterflies and moths in specific sections of the United States).

For this last site, an AV computer with a focus box and television monitor is recommended for demonstation.

 

Teacher Preparation   The teacher should preview these web sites before introducing them to the class.   Sites should be bookmarked on the computers before beginning the lessons.

Student Prior Knowledge and Skills:   Students should already have been trained on mouse skills, should know how to locate a bookmark, and should know how to navigate between screens on the internet.  Students should already have received instruction on the life cycle of butterflies and moths.

Lesson Design/Learning Sequence:

Session One:

1.   Using the web site, Monica the Monarch, reinforce the life cycle stages of the butterfly. Discuss how this would be different for a moth.

2.   Using the web site, Monarch Buttefly Migration Map, reinforce basic map concepts while looking at the migration journey of the monarch butterfly back to the United States.

Session Two:

1.    Using the web site, National Atlas , the media specialist/teacher should demonstrate how to access the maps showing butterfly and moth distribution by type in the United States.

2.    Using the web site, East Silver Spring Butterfly Project, have students explore the various butterfly activities created by their peers at East Silver Spring ES.   If time allows, access links to other butterfly sites listed on this web page.

Assessment/Evaluation:

1. Students successfully navigate through the web sites.

2. Students can explain the life cycle stages of the butterflies and moths.

3. Students can state differences between butterflies and moths.

4. Students demonstrate understanding of basic map concepts.
