It has traveled to many different places, been held by many different people, carried on many different vehicles and gone under water in many different seas, for a total of 17,000 miles. If you don't know what it is, I'll tell you, "It's the Olympic Torch"!

On September 15th, 2000, the Olympic Torch will light the Olympic flame signaling the start of the Olympic Games. On October 1st, 2000, the flame will be extinguished signaling the end of the Olympic Games and everyone has to wait for 2002 when the torch will be carried again for more than 14000 miles.

Every year they get the torch from the Temple of Hera at the site of the ancient Olympic Games. The Games have been around for more than 3000 years. The old Games took place in a city named Olympia in which the Greeks played their games. After 3000 years, you could guess that we play different sports than the Greeks. You might also think that they never had a torch like we do, well if you did, you're wrong! Three thousand years ago, there was still a torch which makes the torch the biggest symbol in the Olympic Games.
