December 2010
What happens when you combine children, reading, and a promise to celebrate? You come to realize that it takes a heroic effort on the part of the children, their teachers, and their parents. That’s exactly what happened at Forest Knolls Elementary School when Cecily Thorne, a parent and Chairperson of the Book Fair presented the idea of a reading challenge to principal, Don Masline. The timing was perfect because the annual Book Fair was fast approaching and it would be a wonderful way to celebrate the joy of reading.
The goal for reading was set at 100,000 minutes. This was accomplished through three Drop Everything and Read mini sessions in their classrooms and independent reading times at home. Students kept track of their minutes through individual reading logs. When all of the logs were returned to school and counted, students read for a total of 197,685 minutes far surpassing their goal!
On a cold blustery morning in December, students, parents, staff, and volunteers were greeted by two energetic super heroes: Batman and Batgirl. It was quite an eventful entrance to school proving that a promise is a promise especially when it’s made to kids.
