Dogs have always been important to man as his friend and companion. According to World Book Encyclopedia 2000, dogs "have lived with people as a pet for more than 10,000 years, longer than any other animal."
Besides being companions to humans, dogs have been trained to assist people as helpers. These dogs assist many people who are physically challenged. They have been trained to guide blind and visually impaired people. Dogs have also been trained to serve as ears for people who are deaf. Service dogs are trained to help their owners by picking up and moving objects or going for help if needed. Helping dogs have made it possible for many disabled people to lead fulfilling lives.
