Mrs. Christiansen's Music Classes

"I believe that there is something of an artist
in every person. This something can be buried or trained. It was always my
aim in teaching to seek out the secret artistry in man and to arouse
it." -- Carl Orff

All students at Forest Knolls Elementary School
receive general music instruction weekly. Students in grades one and
two, have two 30 minute classes per week. Students in grade three
through five have one class per week for 45 - 50 minutes, while
kindergarten students have one class weekly for 30 minutes.
Music instruction at Forest Knolls is experienced
based. The students learn about music by playing with
music. In class, we chant, sing, play instruments, move/dance,
create, improvise, dramatize, use body rhythms using the Orff Schulwerk
approach and instruments. Students are exposed to a variety of music
that reflect a variety of cultures and styles. Throughout the
curriculum there is an emphasis on developing the child's voice, which is
one's primary instrument, the one we all have and carry with us wherever
we go.
