February News

It’s hard to believe the school year is half over! We are so excited that more students earned a Distinguished Honor Roll Award or Honor Roll Award for their report cards. There were many students very close to earning these special awards and we know they will work extra hard this quarter to reach that goal!

In reading for Quarter 3, students will be learning about fables, folktales, poetry, and biographies. Students will read and create various types of poetry using alliteration, onomatopoeia, similes, shape poems, haikus, and more. Later in the marking period after we do some work on biographies, students will have fun researching a famous person and complete a home project creating their very own Mr. /Mrs. Potato Head model of their famous person. More information about this project will be forthcoming.

In math, students will be learning about fractions, decimals, probability, and geometry. Some of the geometry concepts are angles, lines, line segments, rays and transformations. Students continue to show improvement in mastering their basic facts, but we continue to encourage daily practice of these important skills!

Students continue to explore sound in science. Students are investigating characteristics of sound and ways sounds are produced, received, and used in everyday life. Students got the chance to make their very own instruments and we are excited to see them when they are presented at the Sensational Sound Fair on February 1st and 3rd.

In order to prepare for the upcoming state testing, third graders are learning test taking strategies for both math and reading. In addition, the students are working on weekly practice assignments and reviewing answers. Third graders will take the reading MSA (Maryland Schools Assessment) on March 12th and 13th. The math MSA will be given on March 16th and 19th. These tests are very important so please do not schedule medical appointments on those days. Be sure your child gets a good night’s sleep, eats a healthy breakfast, and arrives to school on time every day.

As always we appreciate all you do for your child and our school. Please continue to encourage your child to read at home every day, and to complete the Book It, Reading homework forms, and Math-It calendars daily. ☺
