World Languages Program

The mission of Farquhar Middle School World Languages Program is to educate students in a language and culture in order to make them knowledgeable and active members of a global society. Students will learn to use language for meaningful communication in both spoken and written form through rigorous, proficiency-based methodologies. The world language program emphasizes language as it is used in real-life situations that students are most likely to encounter in their lives in our ever-increasingly global society.   The key to our students’ success is a multi-pronged approach of proficiency based simulations, a rigorous academic curriculum, clear and open communication among all stakeholders, and shared accountability among students, teachers, and parents.  As a result of this approach, students build a linguistic foundation for success in their MCPS academics and as lifelong learners in both their 1st and 2nd languages. Through world language study, students develop sensitivity to the cultural and linguistic heritage of other groups, understand their influence on American culture and language, and become prepared to participate in a society characterized by linguistic and cultural diversity.
