SUMMER PROGRAMS RELOCATED TO SHERWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Due to technology modernization and facility projects at Farquhar Middle School , the school will be closed for student and community programs for the summer. As a result, summer school programs will be relocated to Sherwood Elementary School (SES). Farquhar administrators are working closely with SES staff to plan accordingly for Farquhar students.

Transportation will be provided, and the program will be coordinated by Farquhar staff under the supervision of Mr. Murphy, principal, and Mr. Geddes, summer school coordinator. A satellite Farquhar office will be established at SES, and the Farquhar program will run independent from any SES student programs.

COURSE OFFERINGS:

Intervention Reading * (4 weeks): A review of content, concepts, and skills from previous years’ curricula to increase reading level; to prepare for meeting the proficiency level on the Maryland School Assessment ( MSA ) in Reading and to raise reading level in preparation for rigorous courses.

Who: Students entering 6 th, 7 th, or 8 th grade
Dates: July 7-August 1 Cost: $95

Intervention Mathematics * (4 weeks): A review of content, concepts, and skills from previous years’ curricula and to prepare for meeting the proficiency level on the Maryland School Assessment ( MSA ) in Mathematics and to raise math performance.

Who: Students entering 6 th, 7 th, or 8 th grade, enrolling in Math 6, 7, or Algebra Prep
Dates: July 7-August 1 Cost: $95

Focus on Math (3 weeks): Maximize the student’s potential to be successful in an above-level mathematics course in fall 2008, or to “bridge” to a higher level math course in 2008-2009.

Dates: July 7-July 25 Cost: $75

Option 1:Focus on Math 7(B)– open to students entering Grade 6 who are enrolled or being considered for enrollment in Math 7 for 2008-09.

Option 2:Focus on Investigations on Math (IM) – open to students entering Grade 6 or Grade 7 who are enrolled or being considered for enrollment in IM for 2008-09.

Option 3 : Focus on Algebra – open to students enrolled or being considered for enrollment in Algebra for 2008-09, entering Grade 8

Writer’s Workshop (3 weeks)

Open to any student entering Grade 6, 7, or 8 who would like to strengthen writing skills; learn important skills for writing short and long essays ( BCR ’s & ECR’s); develop skills in responding to common prompts on tests like MSA , HSA, & SAT ; explore creative writing.

Dates: July 7-July 25 Cost $150

Space for all courses is limited and filled on first come/first serve basis.
