Principal Mr. Murphy
Mr. Murphy was appointed principal in July 2005 after serving in 2004-2005 as assistant principal at Neelsville Middle School in Germantown. Prior to that, Mr. Murphy was the student support specialist (2000-2001) and assistant principal (2001-2004) at neighboring James Hubert Blake High School. Mr. Murphy's teaching background is in special education, as he worked as a special education teacher and department chair at various schools in Montgomery County and in Louisiana (1995-2000). He began his career as a Teach For America Corps Member, working as a special education teacher just outside of New Orleans, Louisiana. He holds a Masters in Education from Southeastern Louisiana University and a Bachelor of Arts from Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania. Mr. Murphy earned a degree in School Administration and Supervision from Loyola College in Maryland, and he was the recipient of a Fulbright award to study the educational systems of Japan (Fulbright Teacher Progam, Tokyo, 1998).
Assistant Principal Mr. Gitchell
Mr. Scott Gitchell was selected as assistant principal of William H. Farquhar MS in July 2002. He began his educational career as a mathematics teacher at Takoma Park Middle School in December, 1995. He served as the after-school activity coordinator for Takoma Park and was selected as Mathematics Resource Teacher during the summer of 2002. He was the recipient of the After-School Coordinator Award. Shortly afterwards, Mr. Gitchell was chosen to work at Farquhar Middle School and develop the master schedule for the upcoming school year. Mr. Gitchell has completed the Observing and Analyzing Teaching II (OAT II) class and is completing his final year in the assistant principal development training program. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia, and a Bachelor of Science and Masters of Education from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. He received his administrative certification from Bowie State University in May 2002.
