Homework

Homework is one of the many learning activities in which students engage. Its purpose should be to:

  1. Extend learning and/or provide practice in applying concepts initially presented in the classroom,
  2. Provide opportunities for independent work, and
  3. Strengthen concept and skill development.

For more specific information regarding your child’s class procedures, please contact your child’s teacher. Students are asked to read independently each evening for approximately 20 minutes. In addition, assignments may be given. Time spent completing homework should not exceed the following guidelines:

  • Kindergarten 10 minutes (+ 15 minutes of reading)
  • Grade 1 10 minutes (+ 20 minutes of reading)
  • Grade 2 20 minutes (+ 20 minutes of reading)
  • Grade 3 30 minutes (+ 20 minutes of reading)
  • Grade 4 40 minutes (+ 20 minutes of reading)
  • Grade 5 50 minutes (+ 20 minutes of reading)

In most cases, homework will not be graded, however, in the new Grading and Reporting Policy, there may be some instances when students will receive a grade for homework. Students will know if a grade will be assigned when teachers ask students to complete the assignment. Parents are asked to monitor and support their children. If a parent does a child’s homework, the teacher cannot tell what a student might need help with. If homework cannot be completed in a reasonable period of time, the child should return the incomplete assignment with a note stating that the assignment was either too difficult or could not be completed in the grade level-allotted time.
